Discretion levels

Ask ChatGPT Ask Claude
  • Rate each purchase
  • Tags describe the purchase; discretion records your view

Dinner with friends might feel worth every dollar, while takeout you barely enjoyed might be something you would skip next time. Give each transaction a discretion level: Required, Optional; worth it, or Optional; regret it. Then analyze your spending across tags and discretion to see which purchases you valued and which you regret.

Rate each purchase

Required

A purchase you had to make.

Optional; worth it

A purchase you would choose to make again.

Optional; regret it

A purchase you would choose not to make again.

The three discretion choices in Dollar Diary. Examples below are illustrative; your circumstances determine the discretion level.

Required is the default until you choose another discretion level. Give each purchase a moment of thought: a dinner with friends, a useful class, or a favorite hobby may be exactly how you wanted to spend your money.

Tags describe the purchase; discretion records your view

Tags describe what a purchase was for, who it was for, or which trip it belonged to. Discretion records whether you needed it and, if not, whether you would buy it again.

One tag can hold all three levels. Under Dining Out, dinner with friends might be Optional; worth it, a disappointing takeout order Optional; regret it, and a meal bought with no way to cook Required. Instead of cutting all dining out, you can see which meals you valued and which you would skip.

Read the power of tags walkthrough for examples of tagging by person, purpose, and context, or use the SQL editor to build your own reports across tags and discretion.
